Types of Matchsticks

  • Safety Matches: These are the most commonly used matches, which only ignite when struck against a specially prepared striking surface. The match head contains sulphur, an oxidizing agent (potassium chlorate), and fillers, while the striking surface contains red phosphorus.
  • Strike-Anywhere Matches: These matches can be ignited by striking them on any rough surface, as the match head contains both red phosphorus and the other chemicals required for combustion.
  • Non-safety Matches: Often referred to as “lucifer matches,” these ignite spontaneously when exposed to friction without requiring a specific striking surface. These are less common due to safety concerns.
